Carshalton Methodist Church has always celebrated the place of music in worship. We are one of relatively few Methodist churches still to have a church choir that rehearses regularly and contributes to worship most Sunday mornings.
We invite applications for the position of Organist and Choir Director, following the unexpected death of the post holder earlier this year. Following his 25 years of dedicated service, we are now seeking to continue his focus on upholding the role of music in our worship.
Our three-manual pipe organ is a particularly fine asset. For more details, please visit the National Pipe Organ Register.
One recent visiting organist said, ‘You are blessed to have such a fine pipe organ – I really enjoyed playing it.’
We are looking for a person who understands the central place of music in worship, and embraces a variety of worship styles. You will be a competent organist and pianist, with experience of church music. You will also be an inspirational choir-trainer with good inter-personal and communication skills.
Key Duties
- To play the organ and piano for Sunday morning worship and special services for the major Christian festivals such as Easter and Christmas. To accompany congregational singing and choir anthems.
- To liaise with church stewards regarding the music in services, selecting alternative hymn tunes as required.
- To select and plan suitable and appropriate music for and direct our small SATB choir who currently rehearse on Friday evenings.
- To play at weddings and funerals as required for an additional fee.
- By arrangement, to play for occasional Sunday afternoon or evening services.
- To oversee the tuning and maintenance of the organ and pianos.
Additional Responsibilities
- To liaise with senior church stewards regarding cover arrangements (holiday, sickness) and any matters relating to fulfilment of the role.
If you like the sound of this post, we would love to hear from you. Please email steward@carshalton-methodist.org.uk giving details of your experience.
